As the wavering cry of the foghorn fills the air, the taciturn former lumberjack, Ephraim Winslow, and the grizzled lighthouse keeper, Thomas Wake, set foot in a secluded and perpetually grey islet off the coast of late-19th-century New England. For the following four weeks of back-breaking work and unfavourable conditions, the tight-lipped men will have no one else for company except for each other, forced to endure irritating idiosyncrasies, bottled-up resentment, and burgeoning hatred. Then, amid bad omens, a furious and unending squall maroons the pale beacon's keepers in the already inhospitable volcanic rock, paving the way for a prolonged period of feral hunger; excruciating agony; manic isolation, and horrible booze-addled visions. Now, the eerie stranglehold of insanity tightens. Is there an escape from the wall-less prison of the mind?

I saw this movie at a small, independant theatre in the outskirts of my city as the movie did not air at my usual spot. I'm glad. The experience of seeing this in a small room with 3 strangers seated in wood chairs just added to the whole feeling.
This movie tackles masculinity, power, want, and attraction in a very interesring way that I've never seen before. The movie was very unsettling and dreamlike in the best way possible. It's a unique emotional experience that's most certianly not for everyone, but which I'd recommend to every pretentious film student alike myself.
Do you enjoy weird, hipstery, unique movies that you'll have to melt and think about for a while? Possibly watch some rando on youtube discuss for a while to compare your own thoughts? Go watch this one! Looking for some casual Saturday fun with your friends, or something to put on to get you trough a slow night? Find something else. It's a great film, but definetly not for every occasion.

BRRip is a video that has been encoded at HD resolution (usually 1080p) which is then transcribed to SD resolution. The lighthouse fight. The lighthouse museum. The lighthouse reddit. Listen. Go see this one, trust me. Went to a screening of this movie at Thessaloniki Film Festival and to claim that I was blown away is an understatement. Firstly, let's tick off some technical achievements: direction, cinematography, score, dialogue. Holy crap the dialogue, and especially the monologues each character had, which were something out of a lovecraftian tale, was simply brilliant. Secondly, I was mezmerized by Dafoe's and Pattinson's performances. Robert truly shined in this role and he definitely deserves an oscar nom for best lead, but it is highly unlikely that the Academy will recognise his work. All in all, The Lighthouse deserves a lot more attention than it is getting at the moment. I hope that a few oscar noms will help it gain popularity and reach mainstream audiences, but, then again, you never know with the Academy these days.
